Film Screening followed by conversation and Q&A with Jane Watson, Filmmaker, and Harvey Flad, Professor Emeritus of Geography
Location: Taylor Hall, room 203
Time: 5:30 pm
The documentary Crossing Waters uses archival sources and interviews with current residents of Poughkeepsie, New York, to chronicle the arrival of Irish and Italian immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, their cultural and economic struggles to gain a toehold in a city they have since helped build, and the musings of their descendants, who now feel pushed out of the neighborhood where they were once scorned as invaders. Filmmaker Jane Watson looks at the past history of reactionary nativism in order to shine a light on current debates regarding immigrants and refugees in the United States.
Watson is an independent filmmaker based in the Hudson Valley and a graduate of NYU's film school. Her passion for documentary storytelling and photojournalism was developed while working as a newspaper photographer in NYC, covering civil rights movements, police actions and the political life of the city. Crossing Waters is Watson's documentary debut. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker and Vassar faculty, and a reception.
