2018 marks the 75th anniversary of Vassar College of as a federally designated government documents depository. This is the final event in our series commemorating our involvement in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).

Sarah Kendzior is a journalist and scholar based in St. Louis, Missouri. She has a PhD in Anthropology and an MA in Central Eurasian Studies and is an expert on authoritarianism. She is the author of The View From Flyover Country, a collection of essays examining political corruption in the aftermath of the Great Recession, racism, and economic inequality. She is a lecturer, OpEd contributor to The Globe and Mail, and a frequent guest on MSNBC’s “AM Joy”

Ms Kendzior’s talk “Information, Data, and Power in the Era of ‘Alternative Facts’” will examine the roles of data and misinformation in the U. S. political process and how the manipulation of information and “alternative facts” have helped the current presidential administration consolidate power. She will discuss what these issues have meant for democracy in the United States historically and today as the country sits “at the crossroads of a damaged democracy and a burgeoning autocracy.”

This event is co-sponsored by the Political Science Department.
