Generally, there is no charge to borrow. However, some libraries do charge for lending. The Vassar College Libraries will in most cases cover any fees related to interlibrary loan on behalf of the patron. If you have any questions regarding fees, please contact ill@vassar.edu.
All faculty members are responsible for loans borrowed on their faculty research assistant cards.
ConnectNY: Have your student order and check out books on your faculty research assistant card.
ILLiad: The faculty member can create a joint account as follows:
Choose First Time Users from the Front page of ILLiad to open a new account. Enter "faculty assistant" in the First Name box. In the Last Name box enter your last name/the student assistant's last name, ie: Fergusson/Johnson. You MUST use your faculty 999 number as the Vassar ID number (but this number will not become available to the research assistant). Decide whether you or student will be the email contact, and fill in the rest of the form appropriately. Share the username and password with your student.
Please validate your faculty research assistant card at the Circulation Desk prior to making requests through ConnectNY or ILLiad. Orders cannot be processed until the card has been validated.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.
Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.
This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

ConnectNY requests generally take 3-4 business days, while ILLiad requests take 7-14 business days.
You will receive an email notification of the arrival of your loan(s), which will be held at the Main circulation desk for check-out. Materials will be held for 7 days. All ILL books should be returned to the Main circulation desk for check-in.
Both types of request can be renewed once before the original due date: ConnectNY requests are renewed through My Record on the Vassar library website, ILLiad requests are renewed through the user's ILLiad account. Attempting to renew after the due date has passed will result in blocking the user's account.
ConnectNY is a combined online catalog of selected New York academic libraries. You can search ConnectNY directly or go from our online catalog by clicking on the ConnectNY icon.
You may have up to 50 CNY books on loan at one time. Both CNY books and loans from Vassar Library count towards the total number of items you are allowed to have checked out at any given time.
Click on View Your Circulation Record in the online catalog to review your loans or request a renewal.
If you'd like to request a renewal after the due date, contact a staff member at the main circulation desk in person, by email (circulation@vassar.edu) or phone (845-437-5760). Items whose status appears as 'RECV'D' are ready for pickup at the circulation desk.
If an item is not returned within 30 days of the due date a $100 fine ($75 replacement cost plus $25 processing fee) is automatically issued. At this point, your borrowing privileges will be suspended. If the item is returned promptly, the fine is reduced to $10.00, and your borrowing privileges will be reinstated. If the item is not returned, actual replacement costs will be determined by the lending library and may be more or less than $100, depending on the actual cost of the book. Users will be charged $100 for lost books ($75 replacement cost plus $25 processing fee).
ILLiad is used to borrow books not available in ConnectNY as well as articles and other types of materials. To use ILLiad, you must set up an account.
There is no limit on the number of requests you can make, but if you submit a large number of them, the Interlibrary Loan Department asks that you prioritize them so that the most important items are requested first.
You will receive an email overdue notice the first week the item is due. After another week you will be sent a second overdue notice. A final overdue notice will be sent on the third week and your ILLiad account will be blocked until the book has been returned. Overdue fines from the lending library and/or replacement costs will be charged to your college account. Users are responsible for all ILL materials in their possession, and for replacement costs for materials damaged or lost while in their possession. Replacement costs are determined by the lending library, and often include a processing fee.
Article requests may be filled electronically or by photocopy. The email you get from the ILL office when your article request has been filled will tell you how it was filled and how to retrieve the article.
You may keep photocopies or electronic versions of journal articles.
The Center for Research Libraries (CRL) is a consortium of North American universities, colleges and independent research libraries. The consortium acquires and preserves newspapers, journals, documents, archives and other traditional and digital resources for research and teaching. These resources are then made available to member institutions cooperatively, through interlibrary loan and electronic delivery.
All materials available from CRL, irrespective of document type, may be borrowed. Please review the following information before making requests.
1. To identify materials at CRL, search the CRL online catalog. Not everything in the CRL collection is cataloged. If you can't find what you are looking for, contact a research librarian and we'll find out whether or not the material is available.
2. Requests can be made in two ways. If you're using ILLiad please make a note on the ILL request form that you found this item at CRL. Also most items in the CRL Catalog list an OCLC #, e.g. OCLC # 11502875 at the top of the record; iincluding this number on the ILL request form (in the OCLC Number field) will expedite your request. CRL records are also in the ConnectNY catalog. Order CRL materials you find in CNY the same way you request other ConnectNY books.
3. If you're ordering multiple reels of microfilm via ILLiad, specify the date range in both the Date and Notes fields. You'll need to check out and retun all the reels at the same tiime. If you're ordering multiple reels via ConnectNY, you must order each reel separately.
4. The loan period for CRL materials is 3 months.
5. If you have any questions about finding materials in CRL, ask a research librarian. Contact the Interlibrary Loan department for questions about placed orders.
