Reference sources are used to gain general information about topics of historical inquiry. They can be great places to begin a research project as they provide key concepts and ideas, and often provide recommended additional sources to read. Reference sources are also great tools to locate information about specific historical people, texts, events, ideas, and places that are mentioned in primary sources.
