Zines (pronounced "zeens") are a DIY, self-published medium, incorporating voices and narratives frequently absent from more traditional publishing venues. Zines aren't new; we can trace their history from science fiction "fanzines" in the 1930s and '40s, to underground publishing in the '50s and '60s, to punk zines in the '70s and '80s, to riot grrrl and feminist zines in the '90s, to our current era in which zines are produced and disseminated in a variety of formats (paper or digital; through social media or more conventional means like zine distros or fairs).
